Bishop Ron Hicks to celebrate Holy Week and Easter liturgies
Bishop Ron Hicks will celebrate Holy Week and Easter liturgies at the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet, beginning on Sun., April 10. The week will culminate in a Spanish Mass on Easter Sunday at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Bolingbrook.
“Holy Week offers a spectrum of human experience, including joy, fellowship, agony, betrayal, suffering and loss,” Bishop Ron Hicks said. “Yet the Easter resurrection turns an apparent defeat into a glorious redemption for humankind – all due to our savior, Jesus Christ.”
On Palm Sunday, April 10, the Catholic Church commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. Chrism Mass, celebrated on the afternoon of Mon., April 11, marks an annual gathering of priests in the diocese to witness the bishop consecrating the sacred oils used for the sacraments for the next year. On the evening of Holy Thursday, April 14, the Catholic Church celebrates the Mass of The Lord's Supper. Good Friday, April 15, commemorates the day Catholics remember Christ’s suffering and death. Holy Saturday on April 16 marks an evening of liturgical celebrations that include a solemn blessing of the Easter water with the chanting of the Litany of Saints, the blessing and lighting of the Easter Candle from within a darkened church and the celebration in the late evening hours of the Easter Vigil Mass. Easter Sunday on April 17 celebrates the resurrection of Christ.

Sun., April 10, 10:30 a.m.: Palm Sunday Mass, Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus, 604 N. Raynor Ave., Joliet, Ill. Bishop Hicks will serve as the homilist.
Mon., April 11, 2 p.m.: Chrism Mass, Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus, Joliet. Bishop Hicks will serve as the homilist. This liturgy is a ticketed event for the priests of the diocese and is not open to the public. However, the Mass will be livestreamed and recorded so everyone may participate. Thurs., April 14, 7 p.m.: Mass of the Lord’s Supper (Holy Thursday), Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus, Joliet.
Fri., April 15, 3 p.m.: Good Friday Service, Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus, Joliet.
Sat., April 16, 8 p.m.: Easter Vigil Mass, Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus, Joliet. Bishop Hicks will serve as the homilist.
Sun., April 17, 11 a.m.: Easter Sunday Mass in Spanish, St. Dominic Catholic Church, 440 E. Briarcliff Road, Bolingbrook, Ill. Bishop Hicks will serve as the homilist.
