Bishop Ron Hicks to celebrate in-person/livestreamed Holy Week and Easter Sunday liturgies
Bishop Ron Hicks of the Diocese of Joliet will celebrate in-person/livestreamed Holy Week and Easter Sunday liturgies at the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet. The week will culminate in a Spanish Mass on Easter Sunday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Joliet.
As the largest Hispanic parish in the city of Joliet, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish has been serving the Spanish-speaking community since at least 1948, when the first Mass celebrated in the nearly completed chapel took place on Christmas Eve.
Holy Week is the last week of Lent, immediately preceding Easter Sunday. It is observed by Catholics as a time to commemorate the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Various special liturgies are celebrated during the Paschal Triduum, the three days before Easter.
On Palm Sunday, March 28, the Catholic Church commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. Chrism Mass, celebrated on the evening of Mon., March 29, marks an annual gathering of priests in the diocese to witness the bishop consecrating the sacred oils used for the sacraments for the next year. On the evening of Holy Thursday, April 1, the Catholic Church celebrates the Mass of The Lord's Supper. Good Friday, April 2, commemorates the day Catholics remember Christ’s suffering and death. Holy Saturday on April 3 marks an evening of liturgical celebrations that include a solemn blessing of the Easter water with the chanting of the Litany of Saints, the blessing and lighting of the Easter Candle from within a darkened church and the celebration in the late evening hours of the Easter Vigil Mass. Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Christ.
