Bishop Ronald A. Hicks Appointed Archbishop of New York

Joliet, Illinois, December 18, 2025 — The Vatican announced today that Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Ronald A. Hicks as the 11th Archbishop of the Archdiocese of New York. Archbishop-designate Hicks will be installed on Friday, February 6, 2026, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Bishop Hicks has served as Bishop of the Diocese of Joliet for the past five years. He has led significant pastoral initiatives, including diocesan restructuring and a renewed focus on catechesis, evangelization, and faith into action, as detailed in his first pastoral letter, MAKE.

In accepting the appointment, Bishop Hicks expressed gratitude to Pope Leo XIV and to Cardinal Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States. He also acknowledged Cardinal Timothy Dolan for his more than 17 years of leadership of the Archdiocese of New York and for his support and encouragement.

“I have been deeply blessed to serve the people of the Diocese of Joliet,” Bishop Hicks said. “I will carry the faith, generosity, and the spirit of this diocese with me as I begin this new chapter of ministry.”

Bishop Hicks will continue serving the Diocese of Joliet until his installation in New York. The Archdiocese of New York is one of the largest Catholic dioceses in the United States, serving millions of Catholics across the city and surrounding counties.
