About the Capital Campaign for Human Development

Catholic Campaign for Human Development

On September 5, 2023, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) at the Diocese of Joliet celebrated the 2023 grant recipients with an awards luncheon (see photos below).

This luncheon served as an opportunity for the organizations receiving CCHD grant awards to come together in fellowship with each other, Bishop Hicks, and the CCHD committee. We were blessed to listen to the inspiring words of encouragement from Bishop Hicks, as well as the testimonies of three of our awarded organizations, who shared with us the work that they do and the reasons they are inspired to continue and do more. The organizations represented included local food pantries, emergency assistance, vocational job training for adults with disabilities, and community outreach programs.

A CCHD grant committee, composed of local parishioners, reviewed all applicants to determine their conformity with Catholic Social Teaching, and grant amounts based on applications and available funding. Local CCHD grant funds come from the annual CCHD collection — 75 percent is sent to the USCCB national CCHD, while 25 percent stays local for these grants. Bishop Hicks gave final approval to all recipients, and during the luncheon voiced support of their work as a “holy obligation” to care for our brothers and sisters in need.

The last CCHD collection was taken up in November 2023. Tanya Singh, MSW, serves as our local CCHD Grant Coordinator through the Department of Catechesis and Evangelization, within Ministries of Mercy. To learn more, visit the USCCB CCHD website or contact Tanya at [email protected].
